Not sure what to do this holiday season? Our home city of Houston, Texas, has got you covered. Here are the types of holiday events you could visit this season with family and friends.

1. Catch a theater show.

Support Houston’s local performing arts community and attend a holiday-themed musical, play, or ballet this year. Attend a classic such as the Nutcracker, or try something new, like a jazz version of a Christmas Carol.

2. See a light show.

Houston offers multiple light shows and festivals, starting as early as November and ending as late as mid-January. But if you can’t make it out, even just a drive or walk through Houston’s neighborhoods is likely to have some unique light decorations to enjoy.

3. Go ice skating.

Even the warmer Texas weather won’t stop the city of Houston from bringing this particular joy to its residents. Learn a new skill and get into a festive spirit by going ice skating at the Galleria, Discovery Green, and many other venues. Additionally, taking the kids ice skating is also a good way to get them to be active, but disguised as a fun holiday event.

4. Build a gingerbread house.

Are you a creative type? Decorate a gingerbread house and enter it into a gingerbread building competition. However, if you’d like to brush up on your skills, you can also attend a cooking class at Sur la Table or at a local culinary academy to learn from the best.

5. Visit Santa Claus.

Visiting Santa Claus is one of the most classic holiday events in any city, but in Houston during this time of year, he’s almost hard to miss. You can find him at malls, hotels, or at almost any holiday event. Take a picture with him and your friends and family to turn into a holiday card, a gift, or just to keep as a memory.
